Scene Study- Sense in the Sacrifice. PLUS: Season 10 and Mondays!

Hi All,

Great news! As you may or may not have heard, Bones has been renewed for a 10th season, and starting on March 10th, it will be returning to Monday nights.  The official info from Fox here.

In the meantime, here is a scene study I’ve wanted to do for a few weeks. It takes place in the season nine episode: The Sense in the Sacrifice.

Fun Fact: This post only covers 60 seconds of the ep, yet it still generated over 80 pics. Good times.

I am not going to add a lot of context here at the beginning, but basically, Pelant was still on the loose and horrifyingly so. Booth is on edge because Flynn has been murdered. He and Brennan are interrogating a suspect, and Booth is frustrated. Brennan has a little faith in him (and his faith in Flynn)…it’s the rational thing to do, after all.

Brennan posits that Pelant might be framing Flynn.

Brennan thinks it’s rational, based on what the suspect said. When Booth disagrees, she brings up the point that he stood up for her in the interrogation room, and he says he did so because in all the years they’ve worked together, she has never been wrong.

I love that look; so confident that she knows the truth.

18 19

She tells him that it is equally impossible that his gut is wrong. In other words, the equal evidence of their partnership from her point of view tells her to trust his gut…making it a rational decision.

20 21

Booth is kind of stunned, in that ‘I can’t believe she sees the truth of me and might be kind of dazzled right back’ kind of way he gets. 22 23

And in that moment, there is nothing he can do but kiss her.

Fun little reaction shot from the rest of the bullpen here outside Booth’s office.

Dang, son.

32 33 34

36 37 38

39

Yeah, we were all a little speechless right then.

40 41

“We agreed to avoid public displays of affection at the FBI”, Brennan reminds him, though I think it’s clear she’s pleased. 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49

“To hell with the FBI”, Booth counters.

Double dang, son!

50 51 52 53

That look tells me that phrase might have just become their new code phrase for getting down and dirty.

54 55 56

There. Right there. They are gazing into one another’s eyes. Booth is all fierce and then just the teensiest quirk to the side of his mouth. Dang! 57 58 59 60

“I have to go,” Brennan breathes, and Booth sort of nods along with her words.  There’s a moment where he licks his lips with his tongue (obviously), and it’s just perfect. Couldn’t quite get the right pics from it, but watch it! 61 62 63 64 65 66 67 68 69 70 71 72

Brennan is literally imagining all of the things that could be better than science right now, and they are all standing in front of her, looking all tall, dark and handsome. And flustered, and cute, and you get my point.

“To do scientific things to catch a serial killer” she adds, giving him a little cup of the cheek. 73 74 75 76

Very sweet, and I love the little callback to the Santa in the Slush, when she had to go do something… “with bones…” and was all flustered too. Delightful!

She saunters/sashays away, and Booth watches her go before going into his office.

77 78 79 80 81 82

Go Brennan! 83

To conclude, I really loved this scene. I think that the promos and other various things had somewhat spoiled the idea that Pelant might die and B&B would be fully reconciled in this episode. So this little 60 second gem of a moment was like WHOA, WOW DID THAT JUST HAPPEN!

And yes it did.

I loved that it happened before B&B were back to being engaged, because it shows that no matter what, they always believe in one another.

Okay, enough from me. What did you like about this scene, this episode, etc.

Talk to you soon!

  1. What an awesome day! I found out last night that Bones is coming back, and on my favorite night…and I wake up to a Scene Study? BEST DAY EVER!!!!

My favorite line: Brennan is literally imagining all of the things that could be better than science right now, and they are all standing in front of her, looking all tall, dark and handsome.

    Thanks Sarah! 🙂 🙂

  2. I laughed out loud at your “Dang, son!” comment. It was perfectly placed!

I loved this moment! It’s exactly what DB and ED do soooooooo well – everything is communicated in a glance, with the smallest of gestures.

    Wonderful scene study!!

  3. Awesome scene! They really have such amazing chemistry and it’s all over this one. Super excited about season 10 and Mondays! Friday has been tough for me to watch live and I miss that even though I’ve still watched the eps. Great to have BT updates 🙂

  4. Oops, email!

  5. Thanks for this wonderful scene study! I can never get enough of Bones. And Yay to season 10 and move back to Monday’s… for now anyway. I wonder what the Fall will bring?

  6. One of my favorite scenes. Great scene study. Really have missed these. Thanks so much Sarah.

  7. Did it feel like the entire FBI has been waiting to see that kiss to anyone else? They’ve been rather silently viewing all of B&B’s comments and arguments and making googly eyes at each other, for years. We even saw that the entire bullpen was present when Brennan slapped Booth when they first worked together.
It seemed like such a climactic moment, for them, and for us vicariously.
I know I’ve been waiting for him to kiss her at the FBI since the show began.

  8. One of the best B&B scenes ever! How many times did we dream something like this would happen in past seasons??
Loved Booth saying “To hell with the FBI.”

    Great pics as always!

  9. My gosh, don’t know how I missed this before; I adore your scene studies! This was such a perfect moment to pick, and you deconstructed it with equal perfection. More please-when you get a chance, of course; I know they’re very labor intensive. Thanks!

  10. How did they keep from going into his office, closing the blinds, and going at it? I was surprised she could even stand and walk….let alone walk away from him after that….
